A moment of appreciation for my family, because they’re pretty freaking cool.
I just got home from a canoe trip with my dad, and it occurs to me that my family is actually pretty epic.
This trip was my dad’s one-year-belated retirement gift to himself. A childhood summer camp friend of his passed away over a year ago, leaving my dad a broken cedar-strip canoe.
When my dad ended a teaching and vice-principal career spanning a few decades last fall, he decided refurbishing the boat would be his retirement project. Last week we took the boat, a perfect likeness of Tom Thomson’s grey canoe, through Algonquin.
My mom is celebrating 5 years of breast cancer remission by competing in Dragon Boat World Championships in Ravenna, Italy.
My sister is somewhere in the Temagami wilderness teaching 14-year-old boys to be competent leaders.
And my brother, freshly moved to Alberta for his new Grown-Up-Job, got bored and decided to fly to Vancouver and bike home to Calgary.
Families are cool, y’all.
